The invisible architecture: How event protocol matters?
Event protocol is often mistaken for choreography of timings, speeches and seating orders. In reality, protocol is the invisible quiet architecture that ensures guests have smooth transitions, because every step has already been anticipated on their behalf. Although many associate protocol only with official or institutional ceremonies, etiquette is key in all corporate, social, cultural and business events, as it reinforces the institutional image of the organization hosting the event by providing clarity and consistency. The IMGL 2026 gala at White Palace was the closing night of the largest regional luxury travel workshop ever held in Belgrade and the occasion required the highest standard of protocol of the entire night. By designing the program from arrival to farewell, I was entrusted to make all 150 attendees move as a single, uninterrupted sequence. The
absolute peak was applying the highest royal protocol befitting the presence of HRH Crown Prince Alexander and Crown Princess Catherine, following the tone of openness while maintaining the dignity of their positions.
Applying royal protocol in the presence of HRH Crown Prince Alexander and Crown Princess Catherine brings a set of expectations — forms of address, order of proceedings, spatial arrangements, the management of interactions between royal guests and the wider group — that must be handled with both precision and sensitivity. Getting this balance right is the matter of understanding that protocol serves not to create distance, but to ensure that every person in the room knows exactly their role and feels at ease within that clarity. The programme was elevated by a performance from Viva Vox Choir — one of Serbia’s most celebrated a cappella ensembles — whose voices carried across the White Palace grounds in a moment that stopped the room entirely. For international guests experiencing Serbian cultural heritage across three evenings of the IMGL programme, this was the closing argument: a country that can offer this level of cultural depth, this quality of venue, and this standard of hospitality is a destination that deserves to be known.
